About the Project

Partnership for Sustainability Leadership in Business

As an effort to respond to rapid changes of a global scale—climate change, resource scarcity, and changing customers’ aspirations—many businesses around the world have risen up to these global challenges by gearing their production system and processes towards the creation of sustainable value chains with a focus on generating shared values for businesses, local communities, and the environment. In practical terms, it entails embedding sustainability principles and practices in business operation; forging close collaboration with actors along the value chain—customers, employees, suppliers and business partners; strengthening supply chain management; and building good corporate governance. The focus of the businesses is no longer solely on profit maximization, but also the creation of social good—clean environment, resource efficiency, health, climate resilience, social inclusion and equity—contributing to a sustainable society.

The four-year Project (2020-2023) initiated by Centre for Civil Society and Governance aims at fostering sustainability leadership and collaboration in the business sector in Hong Kong through knowledge transfer, capacity building and network development, particularly a partnership between big corporates and small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

The Project is constitutive of (1) a one-stop Knowledge Inventory which facilitates knowledge documentation, dissemination and exchange among businesses, large and small, and between academics and practitioners of sustainability, and (2) a Collaborative Leadership Scheme through which sustainability leaders in big corporates work closely with SMEs to build a talent pool of sustainability leaders for the business sector.
These efforts will coalesce to support a vibrant business sector ready to cope with sustainability challenges and to meet the triple bottom-line (TBL) pertaining to profit, people and the planet. The Project is supported by the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC).
